A common problem on ovens and ranges with the digital display is that the display starts to go dim after a while. It usually starts gradually and gets progressively dimmer until you can barely see it. You have two choices of repair tactics:. And you gotta be able to solder on printed circuit boards. The digital display is powered by very specific DC drive voltages. Theses voltages are created by a transformer and stabilized by capacitors, all of which are located on the control board.
Locate the capacitors on the control board. Typically, there are three but, again, go with what you see. Make a list of the capacitors, noting the capacitance, working voltage, and temperature rating printed on each capacitor.
Go to your local Radio Shack and buy the replacement caps. Try to buy the ones with the highest temperature rating you can get. Unsolder the old caps and solder in the new one — soldering help here. Be careful to observe the correct polarity when installing the new caps! Mucho domos! If banging on the oven gets the display to come back, it is likely not the capacitors! This is likely a bad solder joint or connection….
I had a intermittently dim display clock on a JennAir WB. Resistance of the 4 VAC was about 1. Flexing the board and the 4 VAC would open circuit. I refluxed all the solder joints on the board and the oven now works properly, with beefier capacitors! As you state, the heat working on the capacitors will eventually get them to dry out and fail. Likewise, after 20 years of use, the solder develops micro-fractures and fails.
I replaced the caps as recommended on my Jenn-Air oven and Voila! A nice bright display again! You must be logged in to post a comment. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn appliance repair online from experts at the Master Samurai Tech Academy! If you have ever looked at your oven display and thought that it appeared dimmer than it used to, you are not imagining things, as this is a very common occurrence.
You can correct this by replacing a small part within the display, which has been damaged by the high operating temperatures in the oven. The repair is simple, but you will need to be able to take apart some of your oven, so refer to your oven's information for more details on its particular construction. Unplug the oven from its power source and remove the front plate holding the display in place. You will have to use a screwdriver to take out the screws holding this part of the oven frame in place.
Take out the display unit from your oven, unscrewing any screws securing it within the oven. You will also have to disconnect the wires running from it. Find the capacitors on the control board of the display, which looks like the circuit board of a computer. The capacitors look like small, cylindrical batteries.
Remove the solder holding each of the capacitors in place with a soldering pump and soldering iron. Place the tip of a heated soldering iron against the solder you want to remove until the solder is hot and liquid. Quickly place the pump nozzle against the melted solder and release the handle to suck it up.
Repeat this for each capacitor until they can all be easily released, then take them to the store to buy replacement capacitors. Insert each of the new capacitors into the holes left by the unsoldered old capacitors.
Solder the new ones in place with the soldering iron. Reconnect the display carefully, just as it was when you took it out. Put the oven frame back together and plug it back into the power. Take a picture of the wiring and capacitor orientation so you can ensure the correct reinstallation. Do not take apart your oven if it is still covered by a warranty because this may render it void.
