If your idle surges or hunts under these conditions, and your idle control valve is staying at one opening value, the idle control settings are not the problem. To get a steady idle, you need three things in place: correct fuel, correct timing, and correct airflow. These problems should be addressed individually.
On an engine with sequential injection, this is simple enough — get the engine idling at Batch fire engines, however, have issues at idle with intake pulse reversion sending some of the fuel into an adjacent cylinder. If your idle hunts when the engine is cold, but stabilizes when it warms up, try more warm up enrichment.
Timing is a very useful tool for controlling your idle speed. Then you can add a row around RPM below your target idle speed if you find the idle to be unstable. The timing in this row can be bumped up by around 2 to 4 degees over the idle timing. The 3d view below shows a spark table set up this way.
Setting up your timing like this has a stabilizing effect on the idle. When the idle speed drops, the timing advances, increasing power and moving the idle speed back up.
The result is an automatic feedback loop that helps maintain a constant idle speed. Not every engine really needs this. However, you need to look out for timing curves that do the opposite.
This can make a slight disturbance in idle RPM amplify itself into an idle speed that cycles up and down rapidly. Too much timing can be trouble. If the timing at your regular idle speed already puts you at the most power output, you have nowhere to go but down.
Over-advanced timing will hurt power as well — beyond a certain point, adding more timing will not bump up the idle, and taken to extremes, it can do the exact opposite. How to do this depends on what sort of IAC idle air control valve you have. No IAC valve at all? Yes, you can run without an IAC valve. No closed loop control is possible. This lets you adjust the amount of opening time as a function of temperature.
Idle Tuning for MegaSquirt
There are two ways these can be run. Open loop mode also called warmup mode simply tells the valve to open a set amount as a function of temperature. Closed loop mode tries to maintain a target idle speed. While not every car needs closed loop idle, it can help compensate for major changes in load. For example, if the idle drops an unacceptable amount when you turn the air conditioning on, you can use the closed loop control to compensate.
I recommend leaving the closed loop control off until you have the engine idling well at a steady load. Both badly tuned closed loop idle and badly tuned fuel or spark settings can cause an oscillating idle.
It only takes a minute to sign up. While I'm sitting idle at traffic lights I put the car into neutral. The engine stays idling at about RPM. However every now and then it drops down to about RPM and then quickly back up to about then goes slowly down to and stays there for a bit until I go again or it drops again.
I am presuming this is a gasoline engine. If so, the symptoms sound very much like the throttle internals are dirty. If gunge builds up on the butterfly valve, it can restrict the air required for a smooth idle when the butterfly is closed, so the engine ECU needs to open the Idle Air Valve more that it thinks it should have to and you get into a cycle of surging revs.
If you take the large air intake pipe off the throttle body, you should be able to clean the internals with some carb cleaner and a cloth. Make sure you don't add any dirt that can get sucked into the engine and damage it. I went through different possible solutions which include replacing the O2 sensor, the CAM accuator and all six plugs. There were low cost attempts and probably needed to be done anyway.

Depending on the car, their are X3 of these sensors and you can either replace them all or find the broken one.
Just one question is your engine management light on or not pal, if so, it will be the 02 oxygen sensors or sensor that just needs replacing. Most likely emissions. Controller will drop down RPM when it can. Or you controller is just having problems. If you put the car in neutral you will put less load on the engine.

All things run good until the coolant temp comes up to about ish. Then I see AFR start to climb until the engine stumbles and dies. Reving the throttle can get it to stay alive but once back to idle it will just lean out and die. It takes about 5 seconds from taking your foot off the pedal at AFR for it to climb up to a point of stalling. When driving, it feels great once you're going; engine speed is up and there is load on the engine.
Pulling away from a stop is not so good, as you have to fight this low speed lean issue. I had a new cheap knock sensor but was getting code 34, so i jumped it out with a ohm resistor. Still get code I tested the TPS and found a bad wire so i replaced it. If that doesn't get through it may think you're driving along at low speed? I verified that the TPS was getting 5V supplied. Also checked the output voltage back to the ECU while moving the throttle plate.
TPS also checks out with 2 to 10 ohms across the range of closed to wide open throttle. Sounds like a temp switch issue. You could get a volume knob at Fry's and wire it into the temp switch, play around with the resistance, and see if you can make it run. If you get it to run well with the volume knob, check the resistance and check it against the factory service manual temp switch resistance, then check your temp switch and see if it is the same.
Did it run well before the swap? Did you buy or build your harness? Did you pressure wash the motor before install? Sometimes water can get into the TPS and screw things up. I like your idea of the volume knob testing! After some poking poking around I see this range for resistance.
Seeing as I just replaced the TPS with new, and the MAF has expected effect on engine running when unplugged - the temp switch seems like the next place to go. The issue does not occur until the car comes up to temp hints towards that as well. Engine was a Craigslist special that a friend of mine picked up for me when I was out of town. It showed up with a bad head gasket and most all accessories in boxes.

All the bolts were loose in one box. That was fun to sort out. I tore it down and put in new rings, bearings, gaskets, etc. I did the harness myself. I unwrapped the wiring harness and pulled all the not needed stuff, and connected to the car for power and relay switching, start signal, and so on.
