The more you shoot it, the more you are going to love it. I've had mine for about a year now, and it is my favorite.
In fact I want to shoot anything. My hands are quite large so I am curious how this gun would fill them. I am guessing good. View Public Profile Find all posts by raggedwhole!

If anyone tries to stop you from doing that, God helped John Moses Browning help you. It's a rugged, bitch-slapping, war winning machine, and it's not taking prisoners. Congrats on picking up a great gun. Every time someone starts a thread on the Coonan I always have to add my 2 cents.
And that 2 cents is it's the most fun gun to shoot that I own. And I own a lot of guns. Shooting a hot load. There will always be someone "bagging" on it, but to each his own. I think it's an engineering marvel. But I'm also the type of person that likes shooting and owning a lot of different and varied guns. I'm not locked into just one type or one model of gun.
Thanks for the review! I've read that the magazines are actually pretty good in the Coonans. I handled some of them at SHOT last year, and I have to give it to them-- it does seem as if they have that potentially-crippling issue pretty well engineered. Still haven't shot one, as I have a 38 Super barrel for one of my 's, but it's on my list for down the road.
How is the recoil, and do you know the weight of the recoil spring? They are interesting and I have owned one. Sold it to a friend so I can still visit it from time to time. Gamecockgangsta It has the factory 22lb recoil spring in it, it does come with an extra 10lb spring for shooting 38's, I have not tried that yet. The recoil is extremely mild, like I said I was shooting gr at fps It is quite loud but it seems to really soak up the recoil I don't really know the weight difference between the Coonan and other 's but it feels very solid but not heavy in your hands.
I've occasionally used my Coonan as a carry gun. That says "Don't mess with me" very clearly. Double taps at the range really get people's attention too.The story of Coonan Inc. Designing a new firearm is one thing, but getting it into production, to market and staying profitable is yet another.
Having been involved at every level of that process at one time or another, I can tell you that it is simply difficult. Partnerships start out with the best of intentions only to suffer a falling out. Some companies just seem to fade away. But others endure, keep trying and eventually become successful firms, bringing innovation to the market. Coonan Inc. Shooters new to the Coonan Classic are likely not aware that Dan Coonan actually started developing this pistol in the late s.
Dan was already a skilled machinist at the time. In fact, he served as an apprentice in manufacturing gyrocopter parts as young as Like many innovators in the firearms industry, he grew up making things by hand on a mill and lathe. Out of that interest and skill base came the Model A, which possessed a linked barrel. Rather than reinvent the wheel, and without the CNC machining utilized today, the rest of the pistol used mostly parts.
Dan Coonan then sold his company to Bill Davis in the late s and left it altogether in Coonan Arms filed for bankruptcy in and was eventually incorporated into JS Worldwide, but both were dissolved in For some, that would be the end of it, but fate and some hard work intervened. Inthe pistol was resurrected. Parts from the original pistols surfaced at an auction, and Dan was able to acquire them. Then he acquired more parts and some barrels from former investors, providing the base for a few guns.
The eventual result was the Model C, a more refined version of the original. It retains the linkless barrel, adding dovetail sights and a smoother overall feel. The pivoting trigger remains along with an external extractor. Like everything these days, it benefits from the precision and tight tolerances of modern machining. His design uses an articulated follower that maintains the proper cartridge angle as the top round is fed.
The result is that Coonan pistols feed various bullet designs and weights consistently, even long. Now the gun, the flagship of the company today, is called the Coonan Classic. The Coonan design remains the only practical and usable. Roughly the size of a standardit is concealable, controllable, accurate and reliable. The Classic is available in a variety of finish options, including stainless and black DuraCoat, with various sights and grips. The company even offers long-slide variants and a version with a compensator.
I recently got my hands on a stainless Classic and Compact for testing, with 5- and 4-inch barrels, respectively.Colt Python 2. AJAX no. Compact Springfield Armory custom engraved ivory grips Scroll Checkered.

Custom designed items cannot be canceled or refunded once work has begun. Most of my items are wood. There are, of course, some variances between different pieces of wood, even within the same board.
I will always try my best to make the best looking piece for my customer. Sometimes I will search out a board with almost no grain, or a piece with a lot of grain. I will often design specifically with the grain in mind. That being said, yours will not look exactly like the pictured items. It will however, be amazing. When referencing grips, I will use many terms. Most are industry standard, however, if you are unsure, please feel free to send me a message.
